The first installment of Cicada Madness takes place inside the offices of a well established record label. I play myself in this sketch, with Mike Pollock (Dr. Eggman of Sonic the Hedgehog) as the record executive. I have no business being at this meeting, but somehow I was able to set up an appointment.
This is a short scene, but there is a lot happening here. The record exec is clearly frustrated about what he just listened to (Cicada Madness!) and explains that there is no way he can sell this as a concept album.
Of course, after I leave the office, the exec calls up his business partner and tells her I have a great idea. We all have this characteristic of being two faced/hypocritical. Why is that? It’s perhaps one of the biggest human flaws. We are just not the same around everyone. Depending on the company, if it’s one on one or a larger group, our behaviors change. This is part of what I’m illustrating in this scene.
Working on this project has changed the way I view the creative process. It’s not always about inspiration. At first, yes, you need that spark to generate the idea. Once you have that concept, it all becomes a big puzzle. You have to focus on putting the pieces together without getting caught up in making it so perfect. Flexibility is important, and with the technology we have at our disposal, the ability to cut, copy, paste and rework can happen so fast.
Until next time….
